This Weekend: 2 Events in LA

  • by

This weekend (October 7-10), the nationally-syndicated and recently revamped Filter Magazine kicks off it’s first-ever Culture Collide Festival happening in East Los Angeles. Working the music-as-melting-pot theme, indie acts have flown in from over a dozen countries to play showcases at various locations. Featured bands include the Black Lips, Jenny and Johnny (newly added), Klaxons, White Lies, Phantogram, The Boxer Rebellion, Monotonix, Casiokids, and Tokyo Police Club, among others.

While performances are scheduled for well-known music venues like The Echo, The Echoplex, and Spaceland, the 4-day festival is also branching out by featuring intimate performances at unique locations like the non-profit organization 826 LA. There will also be several happy-hour showcases at Taix, a French restaurant and lounge in the well-trafficked area in Echo Park on Sunset Blvd.

The weekend’s activity culminates in a Sunday afternoon block party. If you’re headed that way, expect to see a well-curated mini-fest in full effect. The party is to feature two stages of music and food trucks de rigueur including the popular Fresh Fries and India Jones. There will also be live screen-printing and of course,  the obligatory people watching.

Tickets are on sale now via Ticketweb – a wristband is priced at $20 for the entire festival. While pre-sale tickets are limited, for those who wait a limited amount of tickets will be sold at each venue on the night of the show – depending on capacity.

Sunday’s Block Party goes down between Alvarado & Sunset on Reservoir St., and most notably, it’s free! Just make sure to RSVP in advance at the link below.

Sponsors include V Tech, Converse, Dickies, BMI, Guitar Center, Mike’s Hard Punch, and The Standard Hotels.

Over the course of the past six years, Zócalo Public Square has dedicated itself to promoting public discourse in the city of Los Angeles – whether it be downtown, online, or at events by reach of national and international partners across the country and around the world.

Whether on the ground or on the web, the mission of Zócalo is to support the idea of a public forum. Hosting free events amounting to over eight-hundred speakers and counting, speakers are selected to cover a wide range of topics from politics to science, literature and the arts. With a place provided for the foremost intellectuals of our decade to present to the public, countless conversations have been sparked amongst its participants, observers, and attendees.

By encouraging and fostering these conversations and debate, Zócalo encourages it’s visitors to become informed and discuss with one another and rally around the critical issues of our time.  This is a priceless endeavor as the idea of the public square is becoming increasingly eroded by the prevalence of digital media and online debate.

Zócalo exists with the support of many sponsors, partners, volunteers, and it’s audience. Enabled by this support, the organization is able to bring Nobel Prize laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, star academics and innovative scientists to the community to visit and present their work at events that are free and open to the public. The organization  strives to encourage new voices by seeking talented young academics and thinkers while bringing inspiring leaders and experts to the mix.

To support and continue the work of Zócalo and their mission, LA Weekly and Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold is hosting a food, cocktail, and music event at Union Station tomorrow night. The second-annual benefit features a 20’s theme and celebrates Zócalo along with the speakeasy style of downtown LA.

Beats will be provided by KCRW’s Garth Trinidad, craft cocktails will be flowing from famed cocktail mixologists of the 213 camp, and bites will be served up by some of LA’s finest including First & Hope, Grace, Jar, and Rustic Canyon.

It all goes down this Saturday, October 9th at Union Station.
