Had a chance to catch The Fiery Furnaces last night at Largo.
I have a few albums but they never grabbed me as much as bands with similar names & dissimilar sounds like The Friendly Fires.
The brother and sister duo from Illinois are definitely one to see live to fully grasp.
The piano and vocals-only session gave insight into not only their musicianship and artistry, but the obvious bond between the two as siblings and collaborators.
A true poet in every sense of the word, their lyrics are timeless, engaging, and completely unique. The phrases remind me of an avant-garde Lydia Davis or what Alison Mosshart’s guitar would say coming from a similar art-rock space.
Maybe there’s a book of lyrics out there, but it would make a cool package to offer them alongside some art, video, and of course music. I’d definitely buy it!
